Minutes of the Athletic Board
for April 30, 2002

Present: Dave Williams, William Murin, Chris Zanowski, Jim Crowley, Steve Nelson, Adam Deford, Bob Canary, Laura Gellott.

Absent: Rich Walasek, Katie Pruessing

In the absence of Chair Walasek, Dave opened the meeting.

• Softball will be competing in the GLVC tournament this weekend. A few outdoor track athletes have qualified for the tournaments. Golf and baseball have completed their seasons. Our department sent in nominations for the GLVC Paragon Award.

• Dave reported Paulette Stein is going through the last appeal process, which will be delayed so the Chancellor can be there. Brian Coffman will be going to law school this fall, so we will need to hire a golf coach for the 2002-03 season. Mark Olsen is a possible candidate. He has the credentials for the position.

• The volleyball coaching position is now under 102 funding and 75% coaching and 25% marketing. When the hiring freeze is off, we need to do a search for the volleyball position to get it out of the interim status. Dave asked the board for input on requirements of a coach. Should we require a master's degree for a coaching position? Discussion ensued and board recommended a master's degree would be preferred, not required.

• Dave distributed information from different schools regarding awards given to student athletes. He is working with SAAC to start an award/recognition program for student athletes annually. Dave related this year, on May 5, we will have a cookout after the baseball game, approximately 3:30pm, and a recognition ceremony at 7:00 p.m. (Many years ago, the department did have an award banquet and discontinued because coaches gave long speeches and the evening was too long.) We will order each senior athlete a watch appropriately inscribed. If any board member would like one, please let Dave know. We will be naming the awards after past outstanding athletes such as Ted Price, Jackie Aiken.

• A draft of the mission statement for UWP-Athletics was distributed. A Strategic Plan for athletics is important. When the official letter was sent to NAIA stating we will no longer participate in the NAIA, it would have helped to include our Strategic Plan.

• The department's golf outing will be July 15 at Meadowbrook Country Club. Dave will get brochures to members and encourages participation.

• Dave asked which board members would be around this summer for possible search committee participation.

• Please read and comment on the emails Dave sends to members over the summer regarding the Strategic Plan. Please give him your input.

• Adam did not get the president of SUFAC position. He does have the "student at large" seat.

• Jim Crowley distributed copies of the UW-Parkside fight song that was found in the archives of the arts department.

• Next meeting will be in the fall and Dave will send a notice to all members.

Dave adjourned the meeting.
