Minutes of the Athletic Board Meeting
for October 17, 2005

 
Present: Dave Williams, David Wright, Jill Winkler, Dennis DuChene, John Skalbeck, Eric Schultz, Brad Piazza, David Holmes
Absent: Doug DeVinny, Bill Murin

• Dave opened the meeting with introduction of board members and a discussion of the purpose and policies of the Athletic Board.
• The board has input in the 102 budget.
• Every search & screen committee for the hiring of an athletic position must have a representative from the athletic board.
• The board is involved in the evaluation of all athletic staff, a crucial charge.
• The board must approve athletic schedules according to board policy.
• The board reviews eligibility. We have set higher standards than the NCAA and the board could be charged with individual rulings.
• Scholarships are awarded from 102 state money. Approximately 165 students are awarded scholarships in various combinations.
• Dave referred to page 24 of the Faculty/Staff Handbook he distributed regarding athletic policies. Discussion of travel, scheduling, credit loads, etc. ensued.
• Dave distributed the Faculty/Staff Handbook, the Student/Athlete Handbook and the Sports & Activity Center Handbook.
• David Holmes asked if it was okay to have more than one faculty per department. In reviewing policy, that is acceptable.
• Dave asked for nominations for Chair of the Athletic Board. David Holmes nominated Brad Piazza. Eric Schultz seconded the motion. Brad accepted the nomination. All were in favor.
• Meeting scheduling was discussed. The board members agreed Monday is the best day, at noon. Dave and Brad would discuss and get back to the committee on the date for the next meeting.
• Dave reviewed current issues within the Athletic Department. We are self disclosing an athletic situation which will be considered a secondary violation by our conference.
• Budget issues were discussed as relating to our department’s future.
• Game scheduling was discussed.
• Dave related current team updates.
• The meeting was adjourned.
