Minutes of the Athletic Board
for October 25, 1999
The Athletic board met on Monday, 10/25 at 3:30pm.
Present were Piazza, Canary, Letven,Wright, Murin, Wallen, Van Dyke, and Klaver, ex officio.
Corrected: MINUTES OF MEETING
Van Dyke agreed to serve as chair, and was voted same by acclimation.
The Athletic Director posed the issues with which the Board should offer advice and or assistance during the upcoming weeks. These issues include:
-Replacing Dr. Lenn Johns, Vollyball Coach, with a faculty line person may be difficult, while at the same time we need faculty line personnel in our
newly minted "sports management" program.
-Student athletes are having to deal with:
1. lack of cooperation from faculty for scheduled road trips.
2.Finding available courses in Math and Science that don't conflict with practice times.
3.Difficulty with reporting mid-term grades
4. University Seminar complaints.
The board in discussion of each of these suggested:
1. A possible statement which could come from the board and the coach to faculty...the draft of which is being floated, below.
2. That the current grade report going to advising office be circulated to coaches as well as advisors.
A draft statement of what would be circulated to coaches and faculty teaching student athletes would say something like:
"The athletic board would like to encourage our colleagues to consider the required trips by our student-athletes as university-related and
university-representative effort. As such, if make-up work is possible for your class (or ideally if such work can be accomplished in advance of these
trips) we would be most appreciative if their academic work be encouraged to go forward." The athlete and their respective professors are strongly
encouraged to be as clear about such travel schedules as possible during the beginning of each semester.
After a whirlwind tour of the emerging new facility, we adjourned at 4:25pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Leon J. Van Dyke,
secretary pro tem
