Minutes of the Committee on Academic Planning
for May 15, 2002

The Committee on Academic Planning met on Wednesday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m. in Greenquist 344A. In attendance were Tim Fossum, Michele Gee, Gene Goodman, David Holmes, Susan Takata and Gary Wood (chair).

The committee met to review the International Studies program review.

The four main programmatic areas of the Center for International Studies are clearly stated in the self-study, as are the student learning outcomes. The committee agreed that as an institution, we value an international presence on campus and that the center should be supported. The committee also agreed that it makes sense to house the four areas under one administrative roof, however, the co-directors cannot be expected to do all of the work in all four areas.

CAP recommends that until additional resources can be made available, the faculty director and steering committee should focus their energy on the academic functions on the Center, namely, the major, minor and certificate program. Also, steering committee members should play a more active role in running the program. Finally, a high priority should be placed on hiring additional staff for the Center. The nature of the position can be determined by negotiation between the directors and the administration, but it is clear that there is much work to be done in the areas of international student advising, organization of study abroad programs, and
coordination of outreach activities.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
