Minutes of the Committee on Academic Planning
for October 18, 2002

Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 1:10pm by Timothy Fossum, Chair. Present in addition were Walter Feldt, Michele Gee, Eugene Goodman, David Holmes, and Gary Wood, members, and Donald Cress, guest.

1. Mr. Holmes suggested that some of the concerns pertaining to proposals for certificates and concentrations -- especially issues relating to inter-departmental consultation -- could be partially avoided if there were guidelines for proposal submission. Mr. Wood indicated that such guidelines had been devised in prior years and suggested that the committee could use them as a starting point for a fresh look at the proposal documentation process.

2. The Committee approved the following proposals for concentrations and certificates:

a. English: Certificate in Film Studies

b. Theatre Arts: Concentration in Acting, Concentration in Design and Technology, Concentration in Management and Direction. The committee asked that the Theatre Arts Department clarify the following issues for consideration by the Faculty Senate:

i. ENGL 311 and 320 appear as options in the Acting concentration, but they have prerequisites that are not part of the concentration. Does the Theatre Arts Department expect that students can be waived of these prerequisites?

ii. THEA 228 (Acting) and THEA 490 (Design & Tech. and Mgt. and Direct.) both are listed in the catalog as being offered "occasionally". Does the Department expect to offer these on a regular basis, and if so, what are the resource implications?
