Minutes of the Committee on Academic Planning
for September 29, 2008
Present: Robert Barber, Doug DeVinny, Mark Eichner, Michele Gee, Jim Robinson, Mary Kay Schleiter, Susan Takata, Dean Yohnk. Absent: Shane Salerno
The meeting was called to order at 8:08 a.m. by Takata, convener.
Minutes of April 29, 2008 were approved.
Committee Overview, Organizational and Procedural Issues
- Elect a Chair – After some discussion, there was a general consensus for Takata to continue on as chair.
- Meeting Dates/Times – For Fall 2008, CAP will be meeting on Tuesdays from 8-9:30 a.m. We are tentatively scheduling every other Tuesday. We will figure out our meeting date/time for Spring 2009 later.
- Representative on the Facilities Planning Committee – Dean Yohnk agreed to serve of this committee. Takata will forward his name to Bill Streeter.
- Draft Report of CAP 2007-08 was distributed.
- CAP’s charge, organization and procedures – Takata distributed several handouts relating to CAP, (i.e., CAP’s charge, overview of CAP’s work, PAR guidelines).
Anticipated CAP Work for 2008-09
- Program Reviews – Takata mentioned which departments/ programs are up for program reviews this year. There was a brief discussion on how to get program reviews submitted on time. DeVinny will email copies of the program review memo and timeline to all CAP members.
- Academic Planning -- CAP would like to meet early on with the interim chancellor, interim provost and both deans to discuss academic planning and other CAP related issues. Given CAP’s workload, we discussed the possibility of creating subcommittees.
- Position Authorization Requests (PARs) – Takata distributed the PAR guidelines and evaluation form used last year. DeVinny mentioned that there is a committee reviewing the PAR process. It was later asked who was on this PAR process review committee, DeVinny replied Catherine Jameson, Eugene Fujimoto, Sylvia Coronado-Romero, William Streeter and himself.
- New Programs & Program Changes (i.e., concentrations, minors, majors) – Takata announced that it is a catalog year so there will be some program changes for us to review. There are at least three proposals for our next meeting.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 from 8-9:30 a.m. Plan on meeting every other Tuesday. We also scheduled October 21, 2008, but will avoid scheduling a meeting on November 4th.
