Minutes of the Committee on Academic Planning
for Friday, May 5, 2000

The Committee on Academic Planning met on Friday May 5, 2000 at 1:00 PM in Greenquist 344A. Members present were
D. DeVinny, S. Haller, D. Kummings, D. Nice, M.K. Schleiter, R. Singer and G. Wood (chair). Also present was Art Dudycha, representing the School of Business and Technology.

The purpose of the meeting was to complete the review of position authorization requests for 2001-2002 and make a recommendation to the Provost. A draft proposal from John Ostheimer for Credit for Experience Based-Learning was also reviewed.

I. Position Authorization Requests.

The committee recommends that:

A. The following tenure track faculty positions should be authorized for fall 2001. Positions are unranked. The lists are alphabetical.

College of Arts and Sciences.

Art, art history, new position.
Biological Sciences, genetics, Datta/Ball.
Chemistry, organic and general chemistry, Wheeler.
Criminal Justice, area of specialization open, new position (one position).
Communication, organizational communication, Souza.
Dramatic Arts, directing, acting, history, Van Dyke.
English, recent British and American literature, Martin.
Geography, human geography, Richards.
Geology, sedimentology, environmental studies, Fowler.
Music, orchestral conducting, Mueller.
Sociology, physical anthropology, Chmurny/Sasso.
Sociology, theory, methods, Takata/St. Jean.
School of Business and Technology.

Accounting, Cook.
Accounting, new position.
Finance, Chan.
Management Information Systems, new position (one position).
Marketing, Spotts.

B. If funds are available to fill more than the seventeen positions listed above, then the second new position in MIS and the second
new position in Criminal Justice should be authorized.

C. The two academic staff positions in Biological Sciences should be authorized.

D. The following positions should not be authorized for tenure track faculty positions in 2001. Theses positions may be filled
with one-year replacements at the discretion of the Dean and Provost.  Departments may wish to submit PARs for 2002 after appropriate modifications.

Communication, media technologies. The replacement of an academic staff member with a tenure track faculty member has not been justified. The position justification is structured around the need for incorporating media technologies into the curriculum. The relationship of the Communication program to other programs such as Art where faculty have expertise in this area is not addressed. Notably, no mention is made of the existing certificate program in world wide web publishing.

Mathematics, Carr replacement. The department indicates no strategic gaps in its ability to cover courses, only that faculty
members are needed to teach calculus.

Music, music education. The position justification addresses the low number of students who complete both the music program
and the teacher education program, but does not indicate how the department plans to solve this problem.

Economics, Keehn replacement. Decline in enrollment since 1990.

II. Draft Proposal Credit for Experience-Based Learning.

The Committee recommends that the University Committee present this proposal to the academic policies committee and then to the faculty senate after the following questions and issues have been addressed.

Will the proposal require a new position in the advising center?

Will high school course work or audited college courses be considered for credit? Point #4 in the policies section appears to
address this question.

Departments should have the option to require that students pass an examination before being awarded credit.

An example of a CEBL narrative should be included.

Where the term department chair appears it should be replaced with department chair or program director.

Page 1 paragraph 6 states that a letter from a past or present employer is required as part of the documentation. This may not be
appropriate in all cases, for example if the work was carried out on a volunteer basis.

Is there a maximum number of CEBL credits that may be awarded?

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 PM.
