Minutes of the Committee on Academic Planning
for March 24, 2000
The Committee on Academic Planning met on Friday March 24, 2000 at 2:05 PM in Union 104. Members present were D. DeVinny, S. Haller, D. Kummings, D. Nice, M.K. Schleiter, R. Singer and G. Wood (chair). Also present for parts of the meeting were Donald Cress, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Laura Gellott, Chair, University Committee and Larry Duetsch, Secretary of the Faculty.
I. Announcements
Susan Haller has agreed to take the place of Steve Meyer on the committee.
II. January Winterim Proposal
The committee continued the discussion of the January Winterim proposal from the March 1 meeting. Members reiterated their concerns about the program and the incomplete proposal. It was decided, however, to recommend a trial in January 2001. CAP will review a more detailed proposal from the Committee on Alternative Delivery and Programming, and will carry out an assessment of the trial.
Motion (Wood, DeVinny) The Committee on Academic Planning recommends that a January Winterim be tried on a pilot basis in January 2001. Three to five courses should be offered. Departments will submit course proposals to the Deans. CAP will review the trial during the spring 2001 semester. Motion passed unanimously.
III. Class Schedule Proposal
Ron Singer presented the new class schedule proposal. The primary reason for the proposed changes is to create more class hours during prime time. The Monday-Wednesday-Friday noon activity hour would be eliminated and converted to class time. A Tuesday-Thursday noon activity hour would be created. Some departments have responded to the Dean's request for input and those responses have been mixed. The potential effect of the new schedule on support services such as the advising center and the child care center is not known. Ron Singer will contact those groups. CAP will consider the proposal again at a later meeting.
IV. Meeting Times and Procedures for Program and PAR Review
CAP will meet at 1:00 PM on Friday April 21, Friday April 28 and Friday May 5 to review program reviews and position authorization requests. PAR's must be accompanied by updated strategic plans and the strategic plan must address the diversity issues specified in plan 2008.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 PM.
