Minutes of the Course and Curriculum Committee
for December 9, 2005
Present: T. Chang, M. Gurtman, R. Holland, D. Kaufman, L. Moeller, D. Rome, E. Wilson.
The meeting convened at approximately 2 pm.
The minutes of the November 11, 2005 meeting were approved in their new format, which includes more complete information on committee actions. This will be useful for record-keeping. For the remainder of the academic year, R. Holland will work with the Chair to create minutes that follow the new format.
HRM proposals have not yet been resubmitted.
CRMJ 492 Criminal Justice Research Seminar 3 credits
New course
Approved as submitted
The course will need to be added to the elective list when catalog copy is revised. The Committee was unclear whether there are limits on the maximum number of credits or times this course can be taken and can be counted as elective credit toward the major or the minor. The course description for CRMJ 494 contains language to this effect. Similar language should be developed for 490, 492, and 499, if appropriate. The Chair will consult with S. Takata about this issue, and ask D. Rome to get back to the Committee on the CRMJ response.
CSCI 355 Assembly Lanuage Programming 4 credits
and Computer Architecture
Prerequisite change to: C or better in CSCI 241 and CSCI 250
Approved as submitted
The courses of the prerequisite are to be listed from lower to higher (i.e., 241 and 250). The Chair will confirm that the grade requirement (C or better) applies to both courses. Punctuation in the description will also need to be modified for consistency.
MATH 109 Introduction to Statistics 3 credits
Delete/discontinue course
Approved as submitted
No other departments have been indicated as affected by this course.
MATH 223 Calculus and Analytic Geometry III 5 credits
Prerequisite change to: MATH 222
Approved as submitted
Prerequisite changed from MATH 222 and PHYS 201 or MATH 222 and consent of instructor. Department indicates that there is no need for PHYS 201 as a prerequisite any longer.
MATH 231 Discrete Mathematics 3 credits
Prerequisite change to: C or better in MATH 221
Approved with modifications
Approval was contingent upon modifying the prerequisite to read that same as it does for cross-listed course CSCI 231 ("C or better in MATH 221" rather than "MATH 221 with a grade of at least a C").
MATH 350 Advanced Calculus 4 credits
Course description change.
Tabled
The proposal was reviewed and the Committee agreed that, from this point on, new descriptions should include more than simply lists of topics, but should have at least minimal sentence structure (i.e., noun and verb). The Chair will ask MATH to modify new proposed descriptions.
MATH 441 Abstract Algebra 4 credits
Course description change.
Tabled
The proposal was reviewed and the Committee agreed that, from this point on, new descriptions should include more than simply lists of topics, but should have at least minimal sentence structure (i.e., noun and verb). The Chair will ask MATH to modify new proposed descriptions.
MATH 467 Computability and Automata 3 credits
Prerequisite change to: MATH 223
Tabled
The submitted prerequisite (MATH 223) does not match the prerequisite of the cross- listed course CSCI 331. The Chair will discuss this with the chairs of MATH and CSCI to resolve the discrepancy.
Submission Form Review:
The Chair will work with the Registrar’s area (R. Holland and L. Moeller) during the semester break to develop a Word-based modification to the current Request for Curricular Changes form. The form will then be made available electronically on a trial basis.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 3:15 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Michael Gurtman
