Minutes of the Course and Curriculum Committee
for September 16, 2008

Present: R. Barber, A. Bouterse, M. Gurtman, R. Kimmel, E. Wilson, G. Wood

Excused: None

The meeting convened at approximately 12:30 pm.

Minutes from May 2, 2008 were approved.

M. Gurtman was elected chairperson for 2008-09.

R. Kimmel discussed issues related to the preparation of the new catalog, including the timeline. She noted that last year the committee discussed completing the standardization of the frequencies and course descriptions (especially where cross-listed courses are concerned). She indicated the following important dates:

2009-2011 Catalog Revision Production Timeline:

September 26th, 2008    Initial catalog memo and materials sent out to the catalog contacts (department chairs, program directors, deans and appropriate department heads).

November 14th, 2008     Deadline for departments to submit catalog copy drafts to the Registrar’s Office (all major changes must be accounted for here); AND Deadline to submit curricular changes for committee review.

January 23rd, 2009         Catalog copy (in catalog format) made available to departments for final review.

February 9th, 2009          Deadline for departments to submit and finalize changes/corrections to the catalog copy.

March 16th, 2009             Final catalog copy must be sent to printer to have copies available for first orientation and registration.

The committee agreed that departments will be asked to submit all curricular changes to appear in the new catalog by November 14, 2008. These proposals should be submitted along with the catalog copy submission.

Several on the Committee remembered the Curricular Summary form that served as a coversheet for the proposed curricular changes and would like to request this to be used again. R. Kimmel will try to recreate using Excel if the current version cannot be used.

The Committee agreed that the curricular change proposals should be submitted electronically to the CourseCurriculum@uwp.edu (which gets delivered to M. Gurtman and R. Kimmel) and that these would be routed to the Registrar. A paper copy original, signed by the department chair, including any attachments (course syllabus, curricular summary form if submitting more than one) should be submitted to the Registrar.

E. Wilson and M. Gurtman will work on guidelines for course descriptions, including samples. These will be distributed to the catalog contacts to guide them in their course change proposals.

The Chair will bring copies of the current catalog to future meetings.

R. Kimmel include the link to the UW-Parkside Curricular Action Routing grid in the catalog review/production memo.

The Committee discussed meeting times. For now, the meetings will be schedule on Tuesdays from 12:30pm-2:30pm.

R. Kimmel suggested four changes to the current Curricular Change Form (v. 1.2). These will be incorporated into the new version, which will then be posted on the web (Registrar’s form page) for use in the catalog update process.

The Chair will ask to be added to the agenda of the Chairs and Program Directors Meeting (September 29) in order to discuss issues related to submitting catalog copy and curricular change proposals.
