Minutes of the Course and Curriculum Committee
for February 9, 2000

The meeting was called to order by S. Haller at 1:30 PM

Present: S. Haller, T. Hanson, P. James, L. Piele, J. Schmidt

1. International Studies: INTS 100 - New course. Request was canceled.

2. Ethnic Studies: ETHN 333 - New course. Postponed until next meeting.

3. Criminal Justice: CRMJ 3xx - New course. Susan Takata was present to answer questions. Approved (4,0,0)

4. English: ENGL 202 - Course Description Change. Approved (4,0,0)

5. Communication: COMM 410 - Course Description Change. Approved (4,0,0)

6. General Education: GNED Independent Study
The committee discussed this request at length. Since General Education is not an academic department, the committee did not think that an independent study in GNED was appropriate. The proposed GNED Independent Study course catalog copy is not consistent with the general description of independent study on page 22 of the university course catalog. Not approved (0,0,4)

7. Physics: Curriculum Change: Physics Major
Error in previous curriculum change. The department did NOT intend for PHYS 312 to be a requirement in the Physics Major.
Approved (4,0,0)

8. Pre-Architecture Program: Catalog addition
The committee had several questions about this request.

1. There is no indication (signed agreement, for example) that the UW-Milwaukee School of Architecture has approved of this
pre-architecture program.

2. There should be a submission from the Art Department for a catalog copy change. Shouldn't there be some mention of this in their section of the catalog?

3. There should be approval from Foreign Languages since this might impact their enrollments. Is our foreign language requirement compatible with UWM's?

4. Should geology sign off on this since course work in that area is highly recommended?

5. How will advising be handled for pre-architecture students?

6. There should be more explicit language indicating that taking pre-architecture courses at UW-Parkside does not necessarily mean a student will be accepted into the architecture program at UWM. Not approved (0,0,4)
