Minutes of the Course and Curriculum Committee
for October 29, 1999

The meeting was called to order by S. Haller at 12:20 PM

Present: S. Haller, T. Hanson, P. James, L. Piele

1. Sociology request for title change for SOCA 482 from "Cultural Ecology" to "Human Ecology":

Request approved (3,0,0)

2. Request from Modern Languages for change of course number for SPAN 490, "Spanish for Business" to SPAN 419: The committee noted that the prerequisite stated in the new catalog copy on the request form indicated that the perquisite was SPAN 204, "Intermediate Spanish". This was inconsistent with the prerequisite stated on the attached course outline which was SPAN 303, "Conversation and Composition". The committee felt that the SPAN 490, "Spanish for Business" should be renumbered at the 300 level if SPAN 204 is the intended prerequisite. Otherwise, the department should write a justification for having a 200-level course as a prerequisite to a 400-level course. If the department's intention is to have SPAN 303 be the prerequisite, the 400-level designation is fine. The request was tabled until the department clarifies the prerequisite, and writes a justification, (if necessary) for the prerequisite. The request indicates that the new course will be offered once per year. The committee would like to know which semester.

3. Request from International Studies for a new course INTS 100, "Introduction to International Studies": Since she is submitting this request, P. James recused herself from the discussion and vote. It was tabled until the meeting when there is a quorum.

4. Next meeting is was set for Friday, November 19, 1999 at 12 PM in MOLN 248a.

Meeting adjourned: 12:55 PM

Respectfully submitted: Susan Haller
