Minutes of the Committee on Advising
for October 13, 2000

Friday, October 13, 2000, 12:00 p.m.

Present: John Longeway (convener), Larry Duetsch, Bradley Piazza, Christopher Zanowski, Joann Goodyear, Karen Thorne, Mary Power, Megan Mullen. Absent: Gregory Mayer, Oliver Hayward, Stuart Hansen.

Oliver Hayward, subject to his acceptance of the nomination, was unanimously elected chair of the committee. Should he not wich to be chair, he was appointed the duty of calling the next meeting of the commitee.

Most of the time was taken up with discussion of the proposed senate resolution last semeter, "that prior to declaring a major, a
student must demonstrate aptitude by successfully completing two courses in the Major at a grade to be determined by the program faculty." The proposal would have to be resubmitted for consideration if we wished to pursue the matter. A number of objections were brought against the proposal, and various substitute motions were also rejected. Professor Duetsch proposed, after it became clear that there was no general support for the proposal in any form, that it be investigated whether in fact any
large number of students were being led away from Majors they might otherwise consider by too early a declaration of Major, leading to their being advised within the Major from the beginning of their college career.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:50.

Respectfully submitted,
John Longeway
