Present: Theresa Castor, Larry Duetsch, Mark Eichner, Alan Goldsmith, Megan Mullen, Brad Piazza, Kristi Schoepfer, Chris Zanowski. Not Present: Oliver Hayward, Bryan Lewis, Mary Power
The meeting began officially at 3:45.
We began with a discussion of comments sent to Megan Mullen by faculty and staff in response to her e-mail query about interest in an advising liaison program. The comments generally had reflected interest in implementing such a program-though with a small amount of concern that it might unduly burden some members of some departments. The committee agreed that we could not take responsibility for issues internal to certain departments and that we should therefore go ahead with planning the advising liaison program.
We spent the rest of the meeting discussing events to hold next semester both to draw interest in the advising liaison program and, more generally, to provide information on UWP advising procedures. The first of these events, an open forum on advising (possibly with a "keynote" presentation), will be held on Friday, Feb. 7 from noon-2:00. After consulting with Mary Power, Kristi Schoepfer and Megan Mullen will make arrangements for this event (which will include refreshments provided by the Faculty Governance office). Possible participants would include: one or more departmental faculty/staff advisors, someone from the Advising Center, someone from Teacher Education, someone from Multicultural Student Affairs, and someone from the Registrar's Office.
The second event, one intended to draw potential departmental advising liaisons, will be held near the end of March-further details pending.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30. The committee will meet next semester on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 12:30 and Tuesday, Mar. 4, at 12:30 (room TBA).
