Present: Theresa Castor, Alan Goldsmith, Susan Haller, Bryan Lewis, Megan Mullen,
Brad Piazza, Mary Power, Gary Wood, Chris Zanowski. Not Present: Ed Conrad (excused),
Dean Yohnk
The meeting began officially at 2:00.
Megan Mullen was elected chair for 2003-2004 (Goldsmith nominated;
Piazza seconded).
Susan Haller was welcomed as the new director of General Education (and thus
ex officio member of the Committee on Advising).
Megan Mullen provided an update on last year’s activities, particularly noting the report prepared at the request of Provost Rebecca Martin. She will meet with Provost Martin as soon as possible to discuss the report and expectations for the committee in the coming year.
The rest of the meeting was taken up with discussion of possible issues to address in the coming months, including the implementation of uniform advising practices across campus, enforcement of a rule that students must declare a major after having earned 60 credits, and the coordination of departmental advising with that done by staff in the Advising Center.
Since there is a time conflict that affects only Ed Conrad (the teaching academic staff appointee), Chris Zanowski will look into the possibility of finding an alternate appointee.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:15. The committee will meet next on Thursday, October 23, at 2:00.
