We began the year with $25,000 as our total budget. From this, forty eight awards
worth $24,999 were given. Awards ranged between $200 and $1,000, maintaining
the ceiling of $1000. The average award was $521. The balance remaining at the
end of the year was $1. Thirty awards were for conference presentations, either
covering registration fees or travel. Other types of awards included purchase
of research related supplies and equipment, student wages related to research
projects, and workshop attendance.
Preference was given to junior faculty, with a higher percentage of their requests funded in comparison to tenured faculty. As further encouragement, at the end of May, two summer grants of $500 were made available to junior faculty.
CRCA organized and held a research symposium at which the past two year’s research recipients, Professors Zhaohui Li and Frank Egerton, made presentations to staff and faculty members on their research. Both lectures addressed environmental studies and the research program highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of this field of study.
Four nominations were received for the CRCA Research Award, which went to Professor Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz this year.
