Announcements
Jerry circulated information on the 2002-'03 UW Teaching Scholars Program. He also announced an OPID-sponsored faculty workshop on formative assessment on November 9 in Madison. There is an October 19 deadline for nominating participants.
New Business
Al Crist, vice-chancellor for enrollment retention, and Bill Blanchard, director of institutional research and assessment services, joined the committee to discuss ideas for improving the success of first-year students.
Al shared information on two upcoming conferences: The "E" Generation in New Orleans in October and AAHE's Learning in Context conference next March in Chicago.
The committee discussed ideas for a mini-conference to be held on Friday, Nov. 16, 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Galbraith Room. The program would consist of introduction of research data on freshmen (national and Parkside data), a presentation by Bill Blanchard, small group discussions addressing the implications on teaching/learning/advising, followed by a large-group discussion. Information from the mini-conference would be circulated on a Website for subsequent use by faculty.
Conference proceedings would also inform a subsequent mini-conference in spring (Friday, March 1) and, finally, the Third Annual Conference on Teaching/Learning on Friday, May 10.
Laura Gellott volunteered to apply for an OPID conference grant for the Third Annual Conference on Teaching/Learning.
Next meeting to be determined via email. Meeting adjourned at 2 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Fay Yokomizo Akindes
