Faculty Rights & Responsibilities Committee
Annual Report 2003-2004

The members of the Committee were Profs. L. Allen, S. Christoph, T. Fossum, L. Gellott, D. Holmes, G. Mayer (chair), S. Norton, and J. Shailor.

The Committee met 10 times between 27 February 2004 and 8 June 2004, and considered two appeals of non-renewal decisions and one grievance. For one appeal, the Committee found that there was a failure to follow required procedures under UWPF 6.04(4), and that material prejudice to the appellant resulted therefrom. After a reconsideration on remand, the Committee acceded to a request for reconsideration by the Chancellor, and asked the University Committee to appoint an ad hoc committee under UWPF 6.08(4). The ad hoc committee has completed its work, and forwarded its recommendation to the University Committee, which forwarded it to the appropriate Dean.

In the other appeal, the Committee found that the non-renewal decision was not based on any of the impermissible factors specified in UWPF 6.08(2). In the grievance, the Committee made no recommendation for action to the Chancellor, and he took no action.
