The meeting was called to order by E. Zepp, Chair, at 12:06 P.M. Also attending were members, L. Allen, J. Greenfield, F. Kavenik, and M. Mullen.
The minutes of the meeting of March 10th could not be approved due to the lack of a quorum.
The members present continued the discussion on University Seminar. THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE DEVOTED TO FINALIZING A RESOLUTION TO SEND TO THE UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE (FOR INCLUSION ON THE SENATE AGENDA). The essence of this discussion was:
The current University Seminar will be suspended, to be replaced by:
1) An expanded Freshman Orientation program which will include campus logistics, college skills, etc.
2) A series of lectures/discussions (?) (activity hour, Fridays, off-campus sources?) on the "social" issues: drinking, etc.--Passport system?
3) An add-on "lecture/discussion section" (1 cr.) to a discrete set of General Education classes (i.e. Eng. 101, Comm. 105, 107, 108, Psych 101, Soc. 101, etc.) which will address study skills etc. THROUGH THE CONTEXT OF THE COURSE and which will focus on the basic goals of Gen. Ed.: critical thinking, teamwork, writing, oral communication. (The Chair distributed a chart--attached--which is a first attempt to correlate the Gen. Ed. goals with specific "measurable outcomes".)
