Minutes of the Graduate Studies Committee
for November 8, 2009

Attendees: Jeffrey Alexander, Karen Crooker, Fred Ebeid, Dennis Kaufman, George Li

Absent: Scott Thompson, Jesus Ubaldo Quevedo

Election of a Committee Chair: Karen Crooker moved that Jeffrey Alexander be nominated to serve as Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee.  Alexander agreed to serve.  Motion was seconded by Dennis Kaufman.  All present voted in favor. 

General Discussion of Potential Future Committee Business

• Dennis Kaufman said that in future, UW-Oshkosh may wish to unload its handling of the online courses offered through the Center for Economic Education, and its committee has discussed the possibility of sending that responsibility to UW-Parkside.  The group has not given a formal date for such a move yet.

• Fred Ebeid suggested that we consider the idea of sending a proposal to the Provost that calls for the funding of further Graduate Assistantships for graduate students.  This could help with recruitment, retention, and the further expansion of graduate programs in future.  Alexander offered to survey other UW schools’ handling of these positions, and to draft a working proposal for circulation to the committee, which it can consider at its next meeting.
