Minutes of the Information Resources Committe
for October 7, 2002

Present: Profs. Lester McCann (chair), Dennis Kaufman, Mary Lenard, and Wei Song.
Excused: Assistant Vice Chancellor Tom Peischl

The meeting was convened at 3:01 p.m.

The chair began by disposing of various bits of miscellany:

• To date, the chair has not heard back from Don Kolbe on the request for copies of the current building remodeling plans for the
campus (beyond those already received for MOLN D139 and MOLN 211-3-5).

• Rather than name designated committee representatives to future classroom remodeling planning meetings, the committee members agreed to attend when they are able to do so, and to report back to the committee on any details that may concern it.

• The chair reminded the committee that he and Prof. Lenard will be unable to attend the upcoming Technology Advisory Committee meeting on October 24th at 2:00 p.m., due to class conflicts. Profs. Kaufman and Song indicated that they would be able to attend.

• The committee members were urged to attend as many of the upcoming course management system presentations as possible. Kate Pietri should be announcing the schedule well in advance of the first presentation.

The committee then discussed its questions and concerns about the library self-study that Asst. V.C. Peischl asked it to review. After many comments were made, the chair asked each member to e-mail him their individual comments so that he can assemble and send them to Asst. V.C. Peischl in a timely manner.

Finally, the chair reported on his Monday morning telephone conversation with Laura Ricci, Graduate Programs and Research Proposal Developer at UW-Milwaukee, regarding the status of the Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education application.

The background of the application: During the first four program offerings from the National Security Agency (NSA), thirty-six universities were named as Centers of Excellence, but apparently all of these Centers are individual campuses. UW-Milwaukee, in cooperation with UW campuses at Superior, Stevens Point, LaCrosse, Madison, and Parkside, is currently writing an application under the fifth program offering. The NSA is said to be very interested in such a group application, as they are concerned that the US is lagging behind other countries in its production of scientific professionals with practical information assurance (computer security) knowledge. A group of cooperating campuses would be able to educate a relatively large number of students.

If our group of campuses is named a Center of Excellence next spring, each campus would be able to receive faculty development assistance to bring instructors current knowledge and materials to help them improve the integration of information assurance topics into their courses and curricula.

What are Parkside's responsibilities for the application? Representatives from the participating campuses make up the "CyberCore"
of advisers to the program. Parkside's representative is Tim Fossum. Within the next week, Prof. Fossum will be completing a worksheet that documents each Parkside course (primarily from Computer Science) that contains material relating to information assurance. This documentation is required of each campus. In the next two to three weeks, the faculty who teach those courses will each need to submit a vita that will be included in the application. At the same time, Tim will need to complete three additional worksheets with additional course documentation.

According to Ms. Ricci, Parkside is not _required_ to have information assurance policies in place to participate in the application.
UW-Milwaukee has one, and for the purposes of the application, the other campuses can be covered by it. However, the more work Parkside does toward the creation of information assurance policies, the documentation of current practices, etc., the stronger the application will be.

The next CyberCore meeting is in two and a half weeks; the chair is planning to attend in Prof. Fossum's place. Any information
disseminated that is of relevance will be passed along to the committee.

No time was set for the next meeting. The chair will convene a meeting when a sufficient quantity or urgency of business has
accumulated.

Meeting adjourned at 4:12 p.m. Minutes taken by the chair.
