Minutes of the Lectures and Fine Arts Committee
for November 30, 2001

Present: T. Bell, M. Gurtman, C. Lindner, S. McGlaughlin, N. Sicuro Absent: V. Gregory

The meeting convened at 2:04 pm.

Minutes of the meeting of October 26 were accepted without change.

The chair reported that the committee's remaining budget was $4,452.

The following proposals were approved in the amounts indicated:

• Throwing Out the Textbook (F. Akindes): $500

• Joe Davis Lecture (Wallen & O'Reilly): $500

The following proposals were tabled, for reasons noted:

•Dr. Pamela Oliver Lectures (Olsen & Statham). Concerns were raised about the size of the honorarium being requested for a UW faculty member. Conceivably, the amount may exceed some limit or be disallowed. The chair will check with the Secretary of Faculty. Also, some of the events are to be off-campus and the LFA may therefore wish to prorate its contribution.

•Women in the Director's Chair (F. Akindes). More details about the event are needed, including its (nonfilm) content and whether a discussant or panel will be included to provide context or analysis.

• Distinquished Speaker/Smiley (B. Johnson). More details about the event(s) are needed, including its content. Also, the budget category listed as "other expenses" requires a specific enumeration.

The next meeting will be on Friday, February 1 at 2 pm in MOLN 275A. B. Johnson will be asked to attend to answer committee questions.
