Minutes of the Lecture & Fine Arts Committee
for February 24, 2003

Members Present: Tim Bell, Alan Goldsmith (chair), Carl Lindner, Stephen McLaughlin, Nicole Leipski, and Edward Wallen.

The meeting was called to order by the chair, Alan Goldsmith, at 3:50 p.m. in Comm Arts 279.

The minutes were approved.

1. A. Goldsmith handed out the current budget of the Lecture and Fine Arts showing a balance of $2,467.09 with outstanding commitments of $1,780 leaving only $687.09 left to be distributed.

2. A. Goldsmith gave a brief overview of the five proposals that had been prepared for consideration by the committee whose total funding would account for $2,241 or $1,553.91 more than was available. The committee then held a short discussion covering alternative possibilities for funding the proposals.

3. N. Leipski suggested that at least three of the proposals seemed to match initiatives that would make them eligible for PDMAC (Plan 2008 Diversity Monitoring and Assessment Committee) funding. S. McLaughlin moved that the people who had put forth those three proposals be referred to the appropriate PDMAC requirements and guidelines to submit their proposals. In addition LFAC notify PDMAC that they fully supported the proposals, but were unable to fund them as we had expended our funds for the year.

4. The committee reviewed a proposal from Mark Marlaire, Director of Continuing Education, for a campus-wide concert and lecture, The Eclectic Clarinetist: from the Classics to the Contemporary from 2-3:15 p.m., Monday, April 7 to be given by William Helmers, a clarinetist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. The request was for $216 to cover honorarium and expenses. After a brief discussion C. Lindner moved to approve, T. Bell seconded; passed unanimously.

5. The committee reviewed a request from Trenton Bayler, Asst. Prof. of Art, for a $300 honorarium to cover expenses to bring Charley Radtke, a Wisconsin furniture designer/maker who was recently featured in the Milwaukee Art Museum exhibition, One Nature: Five Wisconsin Artists. The lecture will be held March 24. After a brief discussion C. Lindner moved to accept the proposal with the stipulation that the event be publicized more widely with a flyer sent to local arts organizations and schools to encourage a larger audience. N. Leipski seconded; passed unanimously.

6. A. Goldsmith asked if the committee had any ideas for the remaining $171. C. Lindner thought the best use would be to put it in escrow for the proposal submitted by Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes, Prof. of English and Advisor of Sacred Circle to bring in Chris Eyre, Independent filmaker/producer-director of Skins, Skin Walkers, Smoke Signals, Beyond: Images of American Indians in Hollywood and other films. She would only have to request $829 from other funding to match the Sacred Circle commitment of $1,000. C. Lindner then moved to put the $171 in escrow toward future funding of the proposal, E. Wallen seconded; passed unanimously.

In other business:

a. no meeting was set for the remainder of the semester as all funds for the 2002/2003 have been expended.
b. A. Goldsmith stated he'd get out an email to governance with a brief statement about the number of events and that all funds had been expended.
