Agenda and Actions:
1. Minutes of 11-15-07 were read and approved ( SP, JW).
Budget: $6000. minus allocations to date left a current balance of $4975.
Meeting time: EW will attempt to determine a meeting time that works for all members. Apologies to Ami for the conflict.
J. Wang proposal related to “The Environment for Business Investment in China”-Prof. Xinquan Ge. This was approved by LFA last year but matching funds were not forthcoming and the event did not occur. This is a re-request and the match was secured. LFA request: $500. A motion was made and seconded to fund this event (JC, SC). Passed unanimously.
Greg Mayer proposal: “The Good News and the Bad News on How Science is Perceived in the US”-Martha Heil, Amer. Inst. Of Physics. Request: $300. (This proposal received tentative approval via email. Motion to officially approve was made and seconded (JW, JC). Passed unanimously.
Alvaro Garcia/James Kinchen proposal: funds to bring guest soloist Daniel Del Pino (pianist) to perform with the UWP symphony and the Community Orchestra in a concert March 13, 2008. Request: $600. toward an honorarium. Motion to approve was made and seconded (SP, JC). Following discussion the motion was approved unanimously.
Dwight Vaught proposal to fund Ruby Hinds multi-media production of “See There in the Distance: The Marian Anderson Story w/ accompanying lecture and discussion (Feb. 14 and 15, 2008). The amount requested from LFA is $500. The motion for approval was made and seconded (JC, SP) and following discussion of the event, it was approved unanimously.
Committee members requested input from Prof. Vaught regarding the success/outcomes of outreach events such as those funded by LFA in item # 7.
A “call for proposals” has been sent out several times by Dawne Bogardus and it has resulted in several requests.
Budget update: current allocations = $1900. leaving a balance of $3075.
