Minutes of the University Committee
February 20, 2001

The Committee met at 2:05 in 262 CART. Members present were John Buenker, Walter Feldt, Laura Gellott, Fran Kavenik, Greg Mayer, and Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes. Also present were Larry Duetsch, Laura Mason, John Mielke, and (for the later part of the meeting) Dexter Yarbrough.

The Committee welcomed John Mielke, Director of Marketing and Publications, and Laura Mason, Graphic Design & Project Development Coordinator, both of whom have recently joined the Office of University Relations. Members of the Committee said they were pleased to see the UW-P ad and accompanying article that had appeared that morning in the Journal-Sentinel. Mr. Mielke described the process he and Ms. Mason expect to follow in developing our 2001-02 marketing plan over the coming months. At this point, an environmental scan is underway and focused objectives will soon be identified. Among other things, we must define our target market(s) and decide what image we wish to project. We must decide what type of students we wish to attract. The Committee offered to be of help in any way they could. To obtain broader input, they invited Mr. Mielke and Ms. Mason to make a presentation about the marketing plan at the April 17 meeting of the Faculty Senate. The invitation was gladly accepted.

Mr. Mielke and Ms. Mason left the meeting at this point and Chief Yarbrough joined it.

The Committee welcomed Dexter Yarbrough, who has now been Chief of the University Police for five months. Members of the Committee said they were pleased to see the advisories the Chief has recently issued regarding security issues. The Chief said that he has not seen indications of problems here that should be of great concern, but will continue to be a strong proponent of community policing techniques. There are occasional threats to personal safety and thefts do occur here; sensible precautions should always be taken. Overall, he feels the environment at UW-P compares favorably to other campuses. Asked what his greatest concerns are, the Chief first cited the need to establish a high priority for the maintenance of lighting throughout the complex. He next cited the need for creation of an institutional disciplinary process to deal with cases of non-academic misconduct by students that can be more appropriately handled outside the judicial system. The Committee offered their
assistance in pursuing these matters and thanked the Chief for coming.

The meeting adjourned at 3:40.
