Minutes of the University Committee
June 11, 2001

The Committee met at 10:05 in 262 CART. Outgoing members (Laura Gellott and Fran Kavenik) as well as incoming members (Peggy James and Susan Haller) were present. James Kinchen, Greg Mayer, and Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes were excused. Larry Duetsch was also present.

Professor Gellott reported on the June meeting of the UW System faculty representatives. An attorney from the General Counsel's office reviewed key features of the Wisconsin Public Records Law, particularly as it relates to personnel records and student evaluations of teaching, and noted that each institution is obliged to respond to record requests. A summary of the Law and our institutional obligations has been placed on file with the Secretary of the Faculty.

Professor Gellott also reported that the Board of Regents approved a plan that calls for more complete integration of teaching members of the academic staff into institutional affairs. By June of 2002, the Board expects a report on steps taken by the institutions in this regard. She noted that the Board did not approve the new set of academic staff titles that had been under discussion during the Spring semester.

The Committee then discussed the need for closer consultation with Chancellor Keating on a variety of matters, including the selection of an interim Provost and an interim Associate Vice Chancellor. Professors Gellott and James agreed to bring these matters up for discussion with the Chancellor during their next meeting with him.

The meeting adjourned at 11:15.
