Minutes of the University Committee
for December 7, 2001

The Committee met at 8:30 in D135 MOLN. Members present were Walter Feldt, Susan Haller, Peggy James, James Kinchen, Don Kummings, and Greg Mayer. Also present was Larry Duetsch.

The Committee directed the Secretary of the Faculty to forward two resolutions approved by the Faculty Senate on November 27 - one on collective bargaining and another on health insurance - to appropriate people in state government and the UW System.

The Committee completed its review of the November 27 Minutes of the Faculty Senate. This review led to a discussion of the Committee's operating procedures, and there was general agreement that the Committee should meet more often (perhaps weekly) during the Spring semester.

The Committee agreed on nominees to fill vacancies on the Admissions Appeals Committee, the Athletic Board, and the Engaged University Council.

The Committee discussed steps taken recently by the Academic Actions Committee to implement the drop policy approved by Faculty Senate last Spring. It was agreed that the Academic Policies Committee should be asked to review the situation and make appropriate recommendations.

The Committee briefly discussed the need to more closely monitor faculty teaching loads. Some members felt that the faculty should/must take the initiative; others expressed skepticism about the need for a broad review. Members agreed that the discussion should be continued at their next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 9:55.
