Minutes of the University Committee
for February 19, 2002

The Committee met at 2:05 in D135 MOLN. Members present were Walter Feldt, Susan Haller, Peggy James, James Kinchen, Don Kummings, and Greg Mayer. Also present was Larry Duetsch.

The Committee reviewed the academic calendar formula that has been in effect at UW-Parkside since 1988. The final exam period that has been designated for the Fall 2002 semester has been used previously - in 1996 and 1991 - without undue difficulty. For that reason (primarily), the Committee agreed not to recommend any alteration of the formula for the coming Fall. Instead, the Committee agreed to remind the departments (and the deans) that all students have a right to expect their final exams to be held during the designated exam period - December 17 to December 23 in this case.

The Committee reviewed Dean Cress' draft charge to the College of Arts and Sciences College Council. The Committee agreed that the Dean should be encouraged to establish an advisory council that is suitably configured and workable in size. At the same time, there was agreement that the charge to the Council should not circumscribe the powers of the College Faculty as described in UWPF 2.03. With that in mind, the Committee asked the Secretary of the Faculty to prepare a revision of the Dean's draft charge for further consideration at their next meeting.

The Committee also agreed to discuss the periodic evaluation of administrators by faculty members at its next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00.
