Minutes of the University Committee
for September 10, 2002

The Committee met at 2:05 in D135 MOLN. Members present were John Buenker, Peggy James, James Kinchen, Don Kummings, Greg Mayer, and Gary Wood. Also present was Larry Duetsch.

The Committee examined the November 2000 survey instrument that was used to gather faculty perceptions of administrative performance (Chancellor, Provost, and A&S Dean at that time) in accomplishing University objectives. Several members felt the instrument used was unnecessarily complex and should have been based (to a greater extent) on the administrator's job description, rather than the institutional mission. Members also felt that a survey of faculty perceptions of key administrators should be conducted periodically - about every 2-3 years - and that preparations should be made to conduct another survey in February 2003. A subcommittee was formed (Kinchen, Wood) to draft a suitable survey instrument for further discussion.

The Committee then identified nominees for a special election that will be required to fill vacancies on the Committee on Research and Creative Activity, the Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committee, and the Full Professor Subcommittee of the Personnel Review Committee.

Finally, the Committee held a preliminary discussion of matters that may be put on the agenda for the October 1 meeting of the Faculty Senate.

The meeting adjourned at 3:25, with an agreement to meet again on September 24.
