Minutes of the University Committee
for March 11, 2003

Call to Order - The meeting was called to order at 2:05 PM by Prof Peggy James,Chair. Present in addition were Profs John Buenker, James Kinchen, Don Kummings, Greg Mayer, Gary Wood, members, and Prof Walter Feldt, Secretary of the Faculty.

Business - Agenda for the March 25 Meeting of the Faculty Senate

The Committee discussed items for the Agenda of the Mid-Spring Meeting of the Faculty Senate scheduled for March 25.

It was decided to include a recommendation from the Committee on Academic Planning that an entitlement to plan a BS in management information systems (MIS) be forwarded to the administration.

There was some discussion concerning the propriety of recommending an entitlement while the campus budget was about to be cut and UW System had a moratorium on new programs. It was noted that the proposed program was linked to earlier funding for a position in MIS and that the proposal would presumably be placed in a queue to be considered later by System.

A recommendation from the Committee for the Transformation of the Education of Educators (CTEE) was discussed extensively. The proposal would place control of the teacher education program under an as yet unspecified interdisciplinary body.

On a vote of 5-1, the Committee agreed to include the item, but without a recommendation.

A proposal from the Academic Policies Committee (APC) to modify the withdrawal policy was returned to the APC for clarification..

Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 3:30 PM.
