Call to Order - The meeting was called to order at 10:05 AM by Prof Peggy James, Chair. Present in addition were Profs John Buenker, James Kinchen, Don Kummings, Greg Mayer and Gary Wood, Members; and Prof Walter Feldt, Secretary of the Faculty.
Business - Faculty Perception of Administrative Performance - Results and Disposition
The Committee discussed the results of the recently conducted survey of the faculty and teaching academic staff seeking their perception of the performance of selected administrators. Input was sought for Chancellor Keating and Deans Cress and Wafa. In the case of the deans, only the faculty and staff of the appropriate college/school were surveyed. No survey was done for Provost Martin since she only been at UWP since March 1, 2002 and the Committee thought that this was too short a time for meaningful survey input.
It was agreed that the compilation of results would be shared with the administrator involved. Furthermore, in the fall, the Committee would seek a meeting with each administrator to discuss the evaluations. Afterwards, a summary would be prepared and sent to the governance mailing list. All completed surveys will be kept in the Secretary of the Faculty's office for at least two years.
Faculty Senate Meeting Dates
At the Chancellor's request, the Committee had agreed to move the dates for the mid- and late-fall Faculty Senate meetings. Recently, the Chancellor was made aware of a conflict for the early-fall meeting.
After considerable discussion, the Committee agreed to the additional request to move the Early-Fall Senate meeting and asked the Secretary of the Faculty to so advise the Chancellor, as well as remind him of the statutory dates for the spring Senate meetings.
The old and new dates for the fall Faculty Senate meetings
are now
as follows:
| Statutory Date | Actual Date | |
| Early Fall | Sept 30 | 2 weeks later - Oct 14 |
| Mid Fall | Oct 28 | 1 week later - Nov 4 |
| Late Fall | Nov 25 | 1 week later - Dec 2 |
Director of General Education
Prof James reminded the Committee that the new Associate Provost was to have the coordination of general education among his duties. After the description of the duties for the Associate Provost were distributed, the General Education Committee met with Provost Martin and Special Assistant to the Provost, Jerry Greenfield, and convinced the Provost to re-create the position of Director of General Education. A notice to this effect was recently sent to the faculty and staff.
The Committee was unclear as to whether the new Associate Provost would now have any duties in general education. The Committee reiterated its view from the last discussion on general education, on April 29, viz. that some understandings need to be reached among the Director of General Education, the General Education Committee, and its chair, the Provost, and, possible the Associate Provost, and the University Governance office (since program assistant Kim Brudny has some duties in general education) that clarifies the roles and responsibilities concerning general education.
