Minutes of the University Committee
for November 17, 2003

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order by Prof Gary Wood, Chair. Present in addition were Profs Sylvia Beyer, Doug DeVinny, James Kinchen and Don Kummings, members; and Prof Walter Feldt, Secretary of the Faculty. Prof Chris Evans was excused.

Business:

Teacher Preparation Steering Committee
Prof Feldt advised the Committee that the election process for selecting the faculty membership for the Teacher Preparation Steering Committee was underway and would be concluded in a few weeks.

Prof Wood reported that Dean Cress had agreed to send out the formal letters offering those elected to serve and that Steve McLaughlin would coordinate the student membership selection.

Disposition of Senate Resolutions on Political Matters
Prof Wood said that he had conferred with the administration on the appropriate disposition of resolutions concerning such matters as the cost of health care which are occasionally passed by the Faculty Senate. The Committee concurred with a procedure whereby these resolutions would be passed on to the Chancellor who would, in turn, see that they are appropriately forwarded.

Committee on Advising : Declaration of Major before 60 Credits
Faculty policy requires that student declare a major before they have completed 60 credits at UW-Parkside.

Prof Wood reported that the Committee on Advising had considered this matter and suggested that students in the "pending" category be included among those having declared a major and that the Provost had asked the committee to consider the number of students affected by this interpretation.

Terms on Administrative Committees
Prof Wood reported that he had talked with Chancellor Keating about regularizing the terms of faculty members on administrative committees. It was agreed that Prof Wood and Prof Feldt would prepare a suggested plan for accomplishing this.

Evaluation of Administrators - Follow-Up
It was agreed that the "raw data" obtained from the evaluation of administrators survey, conducted last spring, be shared with the appropriate administrator.

Spring Semester Meeting Time
Members agreed to meet at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays in the spring semester.
