Minutes of the University Committee
for September 08, 2005

 

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 3:35 PM by Prof Doug DeVinny, Chair. Present in addition were Profs Mary Lenard, Frances Kavenik, Paul Mohazzabi, Anne Statham and Chris Evans, members; and Prof Walter Feldt, Interim Secretary of the Faculty.

Business:

Discussion with Gary Wood

The Committee briefly discussed each of the following topics with Prof Gary Wood, 2004-05 Chair of the University Committee (UC).

→Secretary of the Faculty recruiting

→Sabbatical proposal review, including the need to activate a review committee.

→Retroactive credits for foreign language, including the exemption disallowing credit to students who are native speakers of that language.

→Admissions criteria, in particular, who sets these.

→The need to complete the faculty perception of administrative performance survey process from last year.

→Plan for faculty review of Plan 2008, Phase 2.

→Consideration of renewing the Orientation Day experiment, which would require Faculty Senate action.

→Transition of committees from year to year, to include having outgoing chairs meet with incoming chairs or committees so that unfinished business and concerns are considered by the new committee.

Provost’s Cabinet Meetings

Since Prof DeVinny could not attend the Provost’s Cabinet meetings held on alternate Wednesday mornings, it was agreed that Profs Kavenik and Statham would share the task for the fall semester.

Augmented Executive Committees

The Committee endorsed the following executive committee augmentations for 2005-06.

History: Add Bill Murin (POLS, Prof) and Alex McNair (MODL, Assoc Prof) to Laura Gellott (HIST, Prof, Chair).

Geosciences: Add Paul Mohazzabi (PHYS, Prof) to Christine Evans (GEOS, Prof) and George Li (GEOS, Prof).

Computer Science: Add Laura Gellott (HIST, Prof) and Paul Mohazzabi (PHYS, Prof) to Stuart Hansen (CSCI, Assoc Prof) and George Perdikaris* (CSCI, Prof)

(*Added later after appointment status was clarified.)

Human Subjects Committee Vacancy

The Committee prepared nominations for a faculty seat on the Human Subjects Committee. The appointment for this administrative committee is made by the Chancellor.
