The Committee agreed to put out a call for nominations for election to the 1999-2000 University Committee. The terms of Professors Fossum and Van Dyke will expire in August 1999.
Professors Gellott and Kavenik reported on the January 25 meeting of the University Planning Council at which Enrollment Task Force Reports on Student Life and Advising were discussed. Members of the Committee called for clear justification of significant new expenditures proposed in the Task Force Reports and were told that members of the Council had called for that as well.
Professor Fossum reported on the 1999 AAHE Conference of Faculty Roles & Rewards which he and several other UW-Parkside faculty/staff attended last week. He was particularly impressed by what he had heard about the success Portland State University has had in transforming itself into an engaged university by involving students as well as faculty/staff in community service. Professor Fossum said he expected that representatives of Portland State would be invited to visit our campus to describe their experience. Members of the Committee said they hoped such a visit would generate further discussion of ways in which the faculty governance structure could support a greater emphasis on community involvement here without seeming to mandate such involvement by all faculty. Such a visit could also generate more widespread discussion of the proposal to create an Engaged University Council.
The meeting adjourned at
12:50.
