The Committee discussed its plan to host a reception for state legislators from the area. In preparation for that reception, Professor Kavenik reviewed the principal items in the 1999-01 Governor's Budget Recommendations for the UW System (excluding the pay plan). These budget proposals are much more generous than past proposals. Overall, they would provide (by far) the largest increase in state support for the UW System in more than a decade. Members of the Committee said that they would like to impress upon state legislators that this increase in state support is very much needed.
The Committee discussed appointments to a number of administrative committees.
Professor Gellott left the meeting to conduct a class and Chancellor Keating joined the meeting.
Chancellor Keating presented criteria he proposes to use to distribute "skim," i.e., ten percent of the allotted increase in the pay plan. He proposes that this year increments should go to those who have helped advance the primary initiatives of recruitment/retention and community engagement. He will ask the Deans to solicit recommendations from the Chairs and in turn make recommendations to the Provost. The Provost will be asked to review market conditions and other inequities when recommending final disbursements. The Committee agreed to support this approach.
The Committee engaged the Chancellor in further discussion of the Governor's Budget Recommendations.
The meeting adjourned at
12:30.
