Minutes of the University Committee
for September 29, 1998

The Committee met at 3:35 in CART 262. Present were members Tim Fossum, Laura Gellott, Fran Kavenik, James Kinchen, Angie McArthur, and Carol Saffioti-Hughes. Also present was Larry Duetsch.

The Committee accepted the Final Report (dated August 7, 1998) of the Ad Hoc Committee on Hearing and Appeals Procedures (copies are available from the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty). In September 1997, the University Committee charged the Ad Hoc Committee "...to investigate and report to the Senate on concerns raised about the procedures followed by the Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committee in recent hearing and appeals cases." The Committee reviewed the Report and agreed to thank the members of the Ad Hoc Committee for their careful work in examining the concerns that had been raised. The Committee also agreed to foreward the Report to the Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committee, asking them to respond to recommendations 2 and 4. Finally, the Committee agreed to establish a working group to follow up on the remaining recommendations, in preparation for possible Senate action.

The Committee agreed to recommendations from Dean Donald Cress regarding membership on augmented executive committees for the Department of Health, Physical Education and Athletics and the Department of Physics.
