The Committee discussed a variety of issues related to the teacher certification programs and agreed to invite the Teacher Education Executive Committee to join them for further discussion at a mutually agreeable time.
Members of the Committee reviewed a memo from Dean Cress concerning suitable criteria for approval of three-week Winterim course proposals and agreed that Professor Gellott should relay a number of suggestions to him. It was thought that three-week courses should offer one or more of the following: an experience in cultural immersion; cultural enrichment for a broad potential audience; skills training; an appeal to juniors/seniors; less than three credits. It was also thought that these first Winterim courses should test the market by offering as much variety as possible.
Members of the Committee took note of Dean Cress' expressed interest in establishing one or more honors societies on the campus (e.g., Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Sigma Lambda) and offered to assist him in bringing this about.
It was also noted that the Committee on Academic Planning has recommended that a proposal to award credit for experience-based learning be reviewed by the Academic Policies Committee before the proposal is forwarded to the Faculty Senate. APC review will be sought early in the Fall. CAP did raise a number of questions and issues that will need to be addressed before Senate action can be sought.
Finally, after a brief discussion it was agreed that the Committee should proceed with plans to conduct a survey of faculty perceptions of the performance of key administrators.
The meeting adjourned at
3:10.
