Members exchanged impressions obtained during the Committee of the Whole discussion of the weapons carry policy in the Faculty Senate. Everyone noted that the discussion had produced numerous reports of disruptive behavior in the residence halls, often creating an unacceptable learning environment and occasionally threatening the safety of students. To ensure safety, provide better support for our academic programs, and improve retention, it was agreed that the Committee on Health, Safety, and the Physical Environment should be asked to examine broader environmental issues pertaining to residence life and develop appropriate recommendations. It appears that a variety of disciplinary issues need to be addressed. Professor Gellott agreed to discuss these matters with Chancellor Keating later in the week, Professor Kavenik agreed to bring them up at the next PSGA meeting, and Professor Van Dyke agreed to do the same at the next meeting of the Committee on Health, Safety, and the Physical Environment.
Turning to appointments and nominations, the Committee formally approved the composition of the search and screen committee for a new Dean of the School of Business and Technology, having done so informally several days earlier. The Committee also approved augmentation of the Executive Committee of the Computer Science Department, forwarded a nomination for the Facilities Planning Committee, and reviewed the slate of nominees for a special election to form the new Committee on Advising.
The Committee briefly discussed the work of administrative task forces that have been formed to develop recommendations regarding experiential learning and alternative delivery and programming. It was agreed that any recommendations that are forthcoming will be forwarded to the appropriate standing faculty committees.
As a closing note, mention was made of the online general education courses that the UW Colleges are currently advertising in the Ranger. Members of the Committee expressed dismay at the wording of the ad and the message sent. It was agreed that the ad should be brought to the attention of all departments that offer similar courses.
