Shared Governance Internship Program
Introduction:
Parkside Student Government is proposing an internship program wherein qualified students, chosen on a competitive basis, would receive one credit per semester for their participation as the designated student member of a shared governance committee.
PSG is seeking authorization for a one year pilot period to ascertain if the program should continue or not.
There are currently 24 shared governance committees which designate student participation. Several committees and academic departments have been approached to see if they would be willing to participate in a “Shared Governance Internship Program”: Academic Actions Committee, Course and Curriculum Committee, First Year Experience, Academic Policies Committee, General Education, and the Committee on Academic Planning.
The goals/anticipated learning outcomes of the Shared Governance internships are:
An understanding of the responsibilities apportioned to each segment of the University as outlined in Wisconsin State Statute 36.09 (i.e. Faculty, Staff, Administration, Students, etc);
An understanding of the work of the particular committee at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside;
Experience with the tasks of shared governance: including representation of student interests, reporting back to PSG standing committees, researching issues, keeping files and minutes, drafting of legislation, serving on subcommittees, etc.
To accurately assess that the student has indeed learned and participated in the committee, the student will put together a portfolio and present their committee project to a faculty representative from the Academic Department granting the internship credit. The chair of the appropriate committee as well as the president of Parkside Student Government will also submit their evaluation of the student/intern’s participation on the committee.
The faculty member will assign an appropriate grade for the internship based upon the oral presentation and content of the portfolio, which will include:
An annotated log of meetings attended by the student/intern
Copies of meeting minutes
Copies of documents and/or legislation developed by the committee as presented to the Faculty Senate, as appropriate
A paper from the student summarizing, analyzing, and evaluating the internship experience and how the experience affects their life and their career goals, along with what experiences they took from the internship experience
The minimum requirements to apply for the internship are:
The student must be a degree-seeking student at the University of Wisconsin Parkside;
The student must be enrolled in at least 1 credit hour (not including the internship program)
The student must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or above
The student must have completed a minimum of 18 credit hours at UW-Parkside
The intern will have 2 semesters to fulfill the requirements of the internship, which would result in 2 internship credits, one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. The fall credit will receive an “I” (incomplete) until the spring presentation when both the fall and the spring credits will receive the same grade as outlined by the above mentioned process.
To inform the Department and Committee who the intern will be, a signature will be needed for the internship from the:
President of Student Government (signifying the intern is his/her appointment to the committee)
Department Chair (signifying the Department’s acknowledgement that the student will receive credit)
Committee Chair (signifying the Committee’s acknowledgement that the student will be on the committee)
No student may earn more than six internship credits from this program.
