INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
The reports of the 1997-98 Faculty committees listed on the agenda were accepted.
REPORT OF THE CHANCELLOR
Chancellor Keating commented briefly on a number of subjects. He expects that the results of the Stamats study will be carefully examined by the campus community. He was encouraged by the reception he recently received at the Case Corporation and at a meeting of the UW-Parkside Benevolent Foundation Board. He was pleased to join members of our faculty at a Women's Studies conference in Eau Claire. He was also pleased with the attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sports and Activity Center expansion. The Chancellor expressed concern about how the UW System will deal with the legal challenge that has been mounted against the imposition of segregated student fees. He reported that President Lyall will propose a 5.25% faculty/staff pay plan for each year of the coming biennium. Finally, he expects that faculty position authorizations will be made within a few days.
REPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE CHAIR
Professor Kavenik reported that President Lyall had reviewed her pay plan proposal with faculty representatives, explaining that the plan was based on anticipated inflation and anticipated peer group salary increases for the coming biennium.
NEW BUSINESS
NEW MINOR
The Committee on Academic Planning recommended approval of the following resolution:
RESOLVED, that an interdisciplinary minor in Arts Management is approved, effective Fall 1999, as described in agenda document A.
Professor Dudycha reviewed the structure of the minor, a product of collaboration between the Art, Business, Communication, Dramatic Arts, and Music Departments. Dean Cress asked that Professor Duetsch be recognized for bringing together the parties to this interdisciplinary effort.
MOTION APPROVED on a voice vote.
NEW EMPHASIS IN MAJOR
The Committee on Academic Planning recommended approval of the following resolution:
RESOLVED, that an emphasis in Arts Management within the Music major is approved, effective Fall 1999, as described in agenda document B.
Professor Dudycha described the differences between this emphasis and the Arts Management minor. Professor McKeever moved that the word "emphasis" be replaced with the word "concentration," so that students who complete this course of study will have that noted on their transcript. Professor Dudycha supported this change. Professor Gellott asked what the other options within the Music major were called. Professor Eichner responded that three options led to teacher certification and a fourth was an emphasis in Jazz Studies.
MOTION TO AMEND APPROVED on a voice vote.
MAIN MOTION APPROVED on a voice vote.
Note: Resolution to Eliminate the Minor in Arts Management
Passed by the UW-Parkside Faculty Senate on November 23, 2010. PSF 16/10-11
NEW CONCENTRATION IN MAJOR
The Committee on Academic Planning recommended approval of the following resolution:
RESOLVED, that a concentration in Human Resource Management within the Business Management major is approved, effective Fall 1999, as described in agenda document C.
Professor Dudycha explained the need for this concentration and reviewed its structure. Professor Saffioti-Hughes expressed concern that the concentration did not appear to include a core course that addresses change in the workplace. Professor Dudycha indicated that HRM 343 (required) and MGT 446 (optional) do address this topic. Professor Gellott asked whether the title of the concentration was the same as that once used for the weekend program. Susan Luke said that it was not. Provost Ostheimer asked whether COMM 303 and MGT 349 could substitute for one another. Professor McArthur described the content of MGT 349 and said she understood that COMM 303 was taught from a very different perspective.
MOTION APPROVED on a voice vote.
ADJOURNMENT
The Senate adjourned at 4:00.
