Bear Paws for Another Cause

The Bear Paws for a Cause was created and is run by the students who enroll in Health, Exercise Science, and Sport Management (HESM) 370: Event Management Class. Students in this elective class are juniors or seniors pursuing the Sport Management and/or Fitness Management Major from UW Parkside. The event began with the inaugural run held in spring 2009.
The students seek sponsorships and prizes; design the brochure, signs and posters; contact past participants; solicit volunteers; trouble shoot the course; and market and evaluate the event. On race day, they are the event directors. It is a 'real life' exercise allowing the students to apply classroom knowledge.
The original class also established the scholarships that are funded through the race proceeds. The scholarships are awarded through the campus scholarship process. In the fall 2010 students will begin receiving scholarship dollars for the fall 2010. (Each year, parts of the proceeds are awarded and parts are reserved to build an endowment for future gifts.)
Each year the event also tries to raise awareness for a special cause. This year our class has chosen to raise awareness to the importance of physical fitness in children and adolescents.
