Hello: I am Dr. Laura Gellott, a professor in the Department of History at UW-Parkside. I am also the chair of the department. I came to UW-Parkside in 1982, after completing my Ph.D. in Modern European history, with a specialty in German and Austrian history, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before that I received both my B.A. and M.A. degrees in history at Marquette University.
At UW-Parkside I teach a wide range of courses in European History. I teach the survey in Modern European History/ HIST 120. I also teach courses in German history, Nineteenth Century Europe, Europe Between the World Wars, and Europe Since 1945. Every spring I teach History 350: Historiography and Great Historians, a course required of all majors.
A happy "occupational hazard" for a European historian is the necessity for frequent travel to Europe. I have been fortunate enough to spend a good deal of time in Vienna, Austria as well as several cities in Germany, including Munich, Marburg, and Berlin. I have also travelled to England, Scotland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and several of the republics of the former Soviet Union. I believe these experiences enrich what I bring to students in the classroom, and I encourage students to take advantage of opportunities for travel abroad as well.
I am very proud of the History Department at UW-Parkside. It is made up of an outstanding group of teachers and scholars, of faculty who really care about their students.
