Employment Opportunities at UW-Parkside

Employment Categories:

There are two general categories of employment at UW-Parkside:

Unclassified positions require advanced degrees in specialized fields. Recruitment is coordinated by the individual department which has the vacancy; there is no centralized employment office for unclassified positions. For information about unclassified job opportunities, contact the department in which you are interested.  You may also click here to view unclassified staff openings at UW-Parkside.

The Classified Civil Service category administered by the campus Human Resources Office includes the following groups of positions:

These positions are State of Wisconsin Civil Service classified positions. A Civil Service test must generally be taken and a successful score obtained before being considered for a permanent job opening.

Recruitment for Classified Positions

Geographic Areas: Wisconsin is divided into 31 geographic areas for recruitment purposes. UW-Parkside is in the Kenosha/Racine area (employment area #1). You must check area #1 on the Application for State Employment form to be considered for a vacancy at UW-Parkside. Check as many areas of the state as you wish, as long as you are willing to accept employment in those areas. UW-Parkside jobs which are advertised in the Wisconsin State Current Employment Opportunities Bulletin will carry the designation "Kenosha/Racine" or "Statewide" after the classification title - for example, "Maintenance Mechanic 2 - Kenosha/Racine".

WiscJobs--State of Wisconsin Job Opportunities: This bulletin lists job openings in Wisconsin State Government and in some local governments. Each issue lists different vacancies. The bulletin is posted at Wisconsin Job Service offices, state and county personnel offices, college placement offices, over 100 public libraries, and many city personnel offices and community-based organizations. It is published approximately 34 Mondays each year.

Subscription Service: You may subscribe to this bulletin. The cost is $18.00 (plus tax) for six months or $35.00 (plus tax) for 12 months. If you are a Wisconsin resident, please add 5% state sales tax and, if applicable, 1/2% county sales tax (please provide the name of the county). Send check and the name/address/telephone number to State Document Sales; 202 South Thornton Avenue; P.O. Box 7850; Madison, WI 53707-7840; or call 1-800-362-7253 for credit card orders. You will receive your first copy in 4 to 6 weeks. Prices and publication dates may change without notice. No refunds will be granted.

Civil Service Exams: Walk-in examinations are given on a Statewide basis or for a specific geographic area. Statewide tests are given for classifications widely used in state service. Test results are used to establish registers used by all state agencies for the next 6 to 12 months to fill vacancies in the particular classification being tested. Geographic area tests are used for specific vacancies at a particular location, and the test results will be used to fill that vacancy. If another vacancy occurs in the same classification in the same geographic area within six months, that register will typically be reused.

Examinations are given on Saturdays in regional testing centers throughout the State. Gateway Technical College, Kenosha is usually the closest test center for Kenosha and Racine area applicants.

Note:  Effective with the June 10, 2000 test center, calculators are allowed on all exams unless specifically excluded in the job announcement or on the cover of the exam.

Application Forms: If you are interested in testing for positions listed in the Current Employment Opportunities Bulletin, you must bring the Application for State Employment form (DER-MRS-38, 5/88), with you to the test site. The application is also available at Job Service Offices and at the UW-Parkside Human Resources Office.
