Guidelines to Hire Employees Under Age 18

Wisconsin Statutes require employers to obtain work permits from employees under the age of 18.

Employees under eighteen years of age must secure a work permit and a "Guide for the Employment of Minors" pamphlet from the sources noted below. The work permit must be turned in to the Payroll Office, Tallent 202, before beginning work. The student should read and give the pamphlet to the immediate supervisor. Each permit issued will cover only the position listed on it.

The requirements for obtaining a work permit are:

  1. Proof of age - birth record or baptismal record
  2. Work Permit Request from the employer which includes an explanation of job duties, hours of work, and parent's consent.
  3. a social security card
  4. A fee of $5.00 which will be reimbursed by the Cashier's Office upon request
