Assistant Professor, Microbiology

The Biological Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin is looking to fill a 9-month Assistant Professor tenure-track position in Microbiology. The successful candidate will primarily teach an upper-level microbiology course for majors, and an intermediate undergraduate microbiology course for pre-nursing students. Additional courses in area of expertise to support a graduate program in Applied Molecular Biology or pre-health oriented students are possible. The incumbent will establish and maintain an active research program that engages students in an area related to microbiology, pathogenesis, or environmental microbiology; and will be active in writing and acquiring external funds to support research. This position reports to the Chair of the Biological Sciences Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching/Advising:
- Teaching courses, advising students; and supervising internships, independent studies, and undergraduate and graduate thesis research.
- Teach the microbiology lectures and labs and to establish an active research program in microbiology that involves undergraduate and graduate students.
The standard teaching load for all full time faculty is 21 credits per academic year, as indicated in UWPF policy. Fall semesters would include the BIOS 202 (General Microbiology) 3-hour lecture and two or three 3-hour laboratory sections (pending enrollment),. Spring semesters would include the BIOS 303 (Microbiology) three-hour lecture and three 3-
hour laboratory sections. In a typical semester, these courses would constitute the full-time teaching load.
Research:
- Maintain an active research program involving students in area of specialization; publication of research findings; application for intra- and extra-mural funding.
Service:
- Service to the department and university; community service related to area of research.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of microbiology in order to teach and perform research in applied molecular biology and pre-nursing areas.
- General knowledge of budgets in order to oversee individual research grants and provide input on department budgeting.
- Extensive work at the computer, laboratory workbench; sitting and standing for long periods of time; lifting and manual dexterity as needed for teaching and research; handling instructional materials, organisms, and microbes appropriate to teaching and research.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in biological sciences or biology-related field with graduate experience in microbiology
- Postdoctoral experience in microbiology
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain an active research program in area related to microbiology, pathogenesis or environmental microbiology
- Ability to teach undergraduate microbiology laboratory-based courses to biology and nursing students
- Significant research experience substantiated by peer-reviewed publications
Preferred:
- Relevant teaching experience
- Demonstrated grant writing ability
- Success at securing external funds to support research
Salary:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University of Wisconsin System provides a benefits package, including participation in a state pension plan.
