The University Of Wisconsin-Parkside is now inviting applications for the Coordinator of Reference and Instruction for the Library. Successful candidates will have strong customer service experience and have a solid understanding of academic libraries.
Reporting to the Director of the Library, the person in this position is responsible for leading reference, information and knowledge services, overseeing innovative library instruction and information literacy programs, and providing faculty outreach and developing collaborative teaching and learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. The Coordinator acts as liaison to assigned academic departments, in support of innovative teaching and learning opportunities. This person is also responsible for some copy cataloging of materials in all formats. The individual in this position has a student-centered educational philosophy and plays an essential leadership role in the planning and execution of services in support of the 21st century library and a learning commons next generation environment, and performs other duties as assigned and appropriate in a rapidly changing information and knowledge landscape. |

Essential Responsibilities: |
Serves as Coordinator of Reference and Instruction
- Plan, set goals, and priorities and implement necessary changes to provide excellent services to students, faculty and staff
- Evaluate reference services, update reference policies and procedures in consultation with the Director
- Provide reference service and research consultation to students and others utilizing a wide range of print and electronic resources.
- Train new librarians in reference related activities and ensure effective teamwork in the department
- Plan and organize reference desk schedule, conduct research, communicate and interpret library policy.
- Lead the reference team and plan monthly meetings to discuss service, collection and access issues
- Collect and maintain reference related statistics ; maintain reference supplies and reference collection
- Participates in all levels of the library instruction/information literacy program.
- Manage collection development budget for assigned departments and reference budget
- Chair the Instruction Team and work with the team to develop policies, goals and objectives; compile instruction statistics.
- Work with the Instruction Team to maintain the Information Literacy program, coordinating the development, maintenance and assessment of the web-based tutorial, including the student database, testing, grading, and record-keeping systems; ensure accurate course completion records are entered in the university's SOLAR system; act as liaison to Instructional Technology Support for courseware issues; coordinate the registration and progress of students completing the tutorial independently.
- Oversee the development and revision of other online and printed instruction materials; work with the Reference Team to coordinate the production of web-based and printed guides, point-of-use, and other user aids.
- Coordinate the library's classroom instruction program; strengthen ties to area middle schools/high schools through programs like Discovering Research
- Plan and implement in-service and other training for instruction staff; develop and maintain the library instruction collection.
Provides collection management support
- Serves as liaison to faculty in designated areas of interest and expertise in support of outreach, collection development, reference and instruction
- Performs copy cataloging of materials in all formats
- Perform authority control work in the Library’s catalog and maintain a working knowledge of metadata schemes as appropriate for all formats
Provides service to campus, community, and UW System
- Serves on library committees and teams, and professional committees as elected or appointed
- Attends training and development sessions and workshops
- Participates in professional development activities to stay current with profession
Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Professional working knowledge of trends and issues in contemporary reference services, academic libraries, learning commons environments, user education, and information literacy
- Proficiency in the use of traditional and electronic resources and experience in implementing web-based and other technologies in services
- Strong student-centered philosophy; demonstrated commitment to excellent service to a diverse body of users
- Excellent knowledge of cataloging and authority control in the context of an automated library system or the willingness to learn
- Ability and desire to work collegially in small groups and team environment
- Ability to think critically, analyze problems, and develop and implement creative solutions
- Demonstrated initiative and achievement in creation of new and innovative library services
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Significant mobility and dexterity to move around the library and retrieve and carry materials from library shelving and cabinets when providing service, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 35lbs.), reaching into deep drawers, reaching high shelves; manual dexterity to pull, handle and shelve books, oversized materials, software, and a variety of media formats; ability to push bookcarts; ability to load microform readers/printers; ability to read titles on shelves and print on computer screens; ability to work with keyboard, mouse and monitor for extended periods of time; ability to travel to attend training workshops, meetings and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required |
- Graduate library degree from an ALA accredited library school
- Three or more years of professional experience in reference and instruction
- Excellent communication skills

Preferred
- A second master’s degree
- Experience with MARC, AACR2R, LCSH, LC classification, OCLC and integrated library system
- Professional working knowledge of trends and issues in contemporary reference services and instruction
- Demonstrated experience in an academic setting
- Demonstrated experience working with a diverse, multicultural population
