Position Summary
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for a full time, 12-month appointment as the Director of the Library. This position provides leadership in advancing the University’s teaching and learning mission through a clear vision of the Library’s role, strategic directions, sound fiscal management, staff supervision and collaborative management style. The Director has a strong understanding of academic libraries within the context of higher education and is conversant with issues, trends, technology and developments. As a member of the Provost’s Leadership Group, enhance communication and collaboration with other departments and promote and strengthen the Library’s role as the academic center of the campus. This is a Limited position.
Institution Description

Responsibilities
A. Leadership
- Provide vision and strategic direction for library services in alignment with the university’s mission and core themes
- Develop strong partnerships within the university
- Encourage professional development of staff to ensure a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce
- Plan and supervise the assessment of all library resources and services for student learning and teaching/research on campus
- Ensure the information literacy instruction is provided in accordance with current standards
- Develop a strategy to market the university library effectively to all constituents
- Participate in the campus accreditation process and prepare the Library for the Higher Learning Commission’s visit
- Communicate effectively with the campus administration and all faculty, staff and student body
- Actively engage in the UW System-wide collaborative work of the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries, and other local and national professional organizations
- Demonstrate continuing professional development through important committee work, conference presentations and/or scholarship
- Develop and administer policy, procedures and operating procedures for the Library
- Serve on university committees as appointed or invited
B. Administration
- Plan, implement and administer all library services, collections and personnel
- Prepare and closely monitor the operational budget and oversee the purchasing of library resources, supplies and equipment
- Recruit, supervise, evaluate and mentor library personnel to effectively meet the changing library and campus needs
- Ensure efficient administration of the Archives/Area Research Center and Special Collections
- Closely work with the Archivist to effectively plan records management program on campus
- Develop the collection of materials in all formats that support the curriculum
- Act as the Provost’s designee for copyright
- Perform other duties as required
Essential Knowledge and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the trends and issues in academic libraries
- Thorough knowledge of the complexities of the academic library in the digital age and understand the appropriate technologies available for library operations and services such as Integrated Library Systems, web based tools and imaging technologies
- Thorough understanding of US copyright law as pertains to higher education and fair use applications
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication
- Strong commitment to diversity
- Ability to provide leadership, mentoring and motivation to the library staff and the campus community; and provide day-to-day management of the library staff and operations
- Ability to plan, manage and oversee complex projects, meet deadlines, and to prioritize work in alignment with the service goals of the library and the university
- Ability to provide oversight and management of the budgeting, purchasing, and financial/strategic planning of an academic library
- Ability to adapt to changing needs of the university and UW System and broader community
- Ability to provide excellent service to a diverse body of users, both internal and external and demonstrate a commitment to customer service
- Some lifting, mobility, dexterity, and extended use of keyboard, mouse and monitor for extended periods of time; ability to drive and travel to training workshops, meetings, and conferences.
Education, Experience, Training and/or Certifications
Required
- Graduate library degree from an ALA accredited library school
- Minimum five years of increasing administrative responsibility in an academic library
- Demonstrated experience supervising professionals and support staff in the library
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing the evolution of the library as technology reshapes its operations
- Demonstrated professional involvement in state and national organizations and/or research and publications
Preferred
- A second master’s degree or an advanced degree
- Demonstrated knowledge of US Copyright laws
- Record of success in implementing innovative library services
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the skills needed to foster personal and effective relationships with diverse groups at the University and with the public
