Director, Advising and Career Services
The Director of Advising and Career Services will provide management, planning, evaluation, budgeting, and direction to advising and career planning services at UW-Parkside. The Director will understand the critical relationship between high quality career and academic planning to student retention and persistence. The director will be responsible for coordinating and integrating all aspects of campus advising, including center advisors, professional or program specific advisors and faculty advisors. The director will provide the leadership to advance existing policies, processes and procedures related to advising and career development along with the vision to revise and develop new directions. The director will dynamically promote the use of technology as a method of record keeping and communication and the collection of data used to guide and improve the delivery of career and academic advising services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must be a dynamic and decisive leader
- Knowledgeable about academic career development
- Must have the experience and ability to develop and lead an integrated advising and career center
- Have respect for and willingness to work with faculty and with other appropriate offices
- Will directly supervise staff in a coordinated effort to achieve success in academic advising and career planning
- Proven ability in budget management
- Effectively utilize technology to provide record keeping and communication for students and other academic advisors; collect and use data to guide and improve delivery of services
- Have effective strategies on referral to and collaboration with other university offices and academic departments
- Provide resources and training for staff and faculty on coordinated advising issues
- Demonstrated ability to work with and support issues of diversity with students, staff and faculty
- Establish short and long term goals; have an ongoing process of assessment to evaluate the success of proposed goals
- Participate and encourage participation in relevant professional organizations and professional development opportunities to maintain a high level of expertise about current trends and best practices related to academic advising and student success
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of a masters degree in advising, counseling, student development, or related field
- At least four to six years management level experience directing a higher education advising center
- Knowledge of developmental advising
- Sound knowledge of student development and sensitivity to the issues and the needs of students from low-income, diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, motivate and inspire personnel
- Coordination of a complex instructional advising program involving multiple organizational units
- Demonstrated ability to work with academic faculty and university administration
- Demonstrated ability to utilize current advising and career development technology
- Experience with budgets and budgetary processes
- Knowledge of national trends in advising and career planning
- Participation in the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate in advising, counseling, student development, or related field
- Three to five years experience directing a higher education center for advising and career services
- Ability to establish career and academic advising services which integrate the theories and best practices of student development, career development and academic advising
Salary:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University of Wisconsin System provides a liberal benefits package, including participation in a state pension plan.
