Module Two: Research Skills and Tools: The OR operator Previous Next

When using OR to connect two terms together, you'll retrieve all items that include either term somewhere in their record. OR is most helpful when searching for synonymous terms. You're looking for articles that contain either the term "socialite" or the term "flapper." The database first finds all the records with the term "socialite." Next, it finds all records containing the term "flapper." Finally, the database combines the two searches and produces a list of records that have either term in them. Most of the records you retrieve will include one term or the other. Some records will include both terms.
