What is it?
When a book or journal
is not owned by the UW-Parkside's Library, a patron may request it from
another library through the Library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service.
How long does it
take?
The average time
required to obtain material from another source is 7-10 days. Journal
articles owned by some UW libraries can be sent as electronic documents
(a patron must provide ILL staff with an active email address) and generally
arrive within 2-4 days. When several sources must be contacted before
an available copy is located, the process may take longer.
Who is eligible?
ILL service is
available to UW-Parkside faculty, staff and students as an aid to research
and study. Undergraduates are limited to five requests per week and
are encouraged to exhaust resources available at UW-Parkside before
requesting material via ILL, due to the length of time it may take to
obtain material.
UW-Parkside Library
patrons holding Special Borrowers cards are eligible to use the ILL
service on a fee basis of $6.50 per request, payable at the time the
request is submitted.
How will I be notified?
It is the responsibility
of our undergraduate patrons to check at the Circulation Desk when the library is open to see if their
materials have arrived. Faculty, staff, and graduate
students who supply an office address will receive photocopied materials
and book notifications via campus mail. Patrons who provide an active
email address on their request card will be notified via email when
requests arrive.
Will it cost anything?
There is no charge
to UW-Parkside faculty, staff, and students for materials available
from Wisconsin Library Services, other Wisconsin libraries or out-of-state
libraries that do not charge for their services. Out-of-state libraries
often charge a fee for photocopying or lending materials; therefore,
these items can be requested only for faculty, staff, and graduate students.
Special borrowers requesting ILL items that are available only from
out-of-state libraries that charge for loans will be responsible for
these fees in addition to the $6.50 per request fee.
How do I place
a request?
For books, theses,
videos, DVDs, CDs, audiocassettes, phonorecords (vinyl records), microfilm, microfiche, microcard, and films (e.g. 16mm) patrons should first search other UW campus libraries
using UW-System Search. UW-System Search provides patrons with the opportunity
to select and request returnable items from other UW campuses. Materials
requested through UW-System Search can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. When requested items arrive at the UWP library, patrons are
notified by telephone, email, or mail. Books borrowed through UW-System Search can
be renewed one time (at the lending library's discretion); videos, DVDs
and CDs are not renewable.
For journal articles
and items not available through UW-System Search, patrons should fill out an online
request form using ILLiad.
Patrons must use their Ranger Card identification number in order to
place an interlibrary loan request.
Patrons are asked
to fill out the entire web page form as completely and accurately as
possible without abbreviations. Patrons requesting journal articles
must read the copyright compliance statement and respond accordingly
to the statement on the web page form.
Patrons should also
provide an email address or a telephone number with voice mail at the
time their requests are submitted. If there is a problem filling a request,
ILL staff will send an email to the address provided on the ILLiad
request form or leave a voice message.
Due-dates and renewals
Loaned materials
must be returned to the lender by the due-date specified on the
front of the book-band. Renewals may be requested, but are granted at
the discretion of the lending library. Renewal requests must be submitted
to the ILL staff before the item is due.
Alternatives to
ILL
Reciprocal Agreements
A reciprocal borrowing
agreement allows UW-Parkside faculty, staff, and students visiting Carthage
College and other University of Wisconsin campuses to check out materials
directly from those libraries. Patrons may check the catalogs of these
libraries by using the option Other
Library Catalogs
