What is it?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided by the UW-Parkside Library to help faculty, staff and students to obtain materials not owned by us, or another library in the University of Wisconsin system.
How long does it take?
The average time required to obtain material from another source is 7-10 days. Journal articles are sent as electronic documents and generally arrive within 2-4 days. An active UWP e-mail address must be available. When several sources must be contacted before an available copy is located, the process may take longer.
Who is eligible?
ILL service is available to UW-Parkside faculty, staff and students as an aid to research and study. Undergraduates are limited to five requests per week and all patrons are encouraged to exhaust resources available at UW-Parkside, as well as through UW System Borrowing, before requesting material via ILL, due to the cost and length of time it may take to obtain material.
UW-Parkside Library patrons holding a Special Borrower’s card are eligible to use the ILL service on a limited fee basis. We strongly encourage our Special Borrowers to check with the public libraries ILL department closest to them, before making a request with us. Generally there is no charge when requests are placed through a public library. If you are still unable to obtain the material, you may then place a request with our ILL department. There is an $8.00 non-refundable processing fee PER item requested and you must have a current UW-Parkside Special Borrower’s card at time of request. This is to be paid in full before the item is searched for. If a library is willing to lend an item at a fee, you will be contacted with the amount information. If you still choose to have the item sent, the additional fee must be paid in advance. There may be times when an item can not be obtained even if requested. This is at the discretion of the lending library, as is the due date and the restrictions, if any (eg: library use only )
How will I be notified?
An email will be sent to your UW-Parkside email account when your materials have been received. Please check this account regularly as received articles are only available for 30 days upon receipt.
You can track the progress of your requests by accessing your ILLiad account. Renewal of requests can also be placed through your ILLiad account.
Will it cost anything?
There is no charge to UW-Parkside faculty, staff, and students for materials available from Wisconsin Library Services, other Wisconsin libraries or out-of-state libraries that do not charge for their services. Out-of-state libraries often charge a fee for photocopying or lending materials; therefore, these items can be requested only for faculty, staff, and graduate students.
How do I place a request?
The ILLiad Interlibrary Loan system is separate from other library resources. To place or view a request, you must log-in by entering your UW-Parkside ID number found on the front of your Ranger Card. (P number) Once you are logged in you can select either “Request an Article” or “Request a Book”. Please provide as complete and accurate information as possible before clicking the “Submit Request”. Before placing a request, please check UW System Borrowing, to confirm that the item is not available from another UW Library. UW System Borrowing is a free service available to all UW campuses and is much quicker then ILL.
If you are in one of the library’s databases and would like to request an article that is not available in full text or available in the UW-Parkside library, click on the “Find It” button and then click on ILLiad “Go” button from the list of options for obtaining the article. You must log-in to ILLiad with your UW-Parkside ID (P number) on the front of your Ranger Card. The article information will automatically be filled in and all you need to do is click “Submit request.” Any requests for articles that are owned by the UW-Parkside library, either in the library or electronically, or requests that are unable to be filled, will be cancelled with an explanation of why.
Due dates and renewals
Loaned materials must be returned to the lender by the due-date specified on the front of the item. Renewals may be requested, but are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Renewals can be requested by logging into your ILLiad account or by talking to the Interlibrary Loan Officer. Requests for a renewal must be made before the item is due.
Alternatives to ILL
Reciprocal Agreements
A reciprocal borrowing agreement allows UW-Parkside faculty, staff, and students visiting Carthage College and other University of Wisconsin campuses to check out materials directly from those libraries. Please use your Ranger ID card when visiting these other libraries. Searches can be made from the UW-Parkside catalog by clicking on MultiLibrary search from the UW-Parkside catalog or by using the option “Other Library Catalogs.”
